It wasn't Café Kichijouji De, which makes me a sad bunny. :( It was, however, chocolate from Hotel Chocolate, so I don't mind so much. ^_^

I have a sneaking suspicion I'll have to buy FullMetal Alchemist DVD #2. Mum said she wasn't watching the first disc when I was watching it downstairs, but after it finished and I was watching Samurai Champloo, she started asking me what happened in ep #4. I think she was more into it than she would admit...

I've got XXXholic #2, #3 and #4 to watch! I don't really care so much that it's been licensed, because as far as I know it's not been licensed here yet. I can't help that, can I? I'm not really supposed to be allowed to import anything on DVD, all the companies used to rant on about how bad importing was.

Well, I just arranged to import Scrapped Princess DVDs 1, 2 and 3 and Loveless DVDs 1 and 2, neither series of which has been licensed here.

You know the ultimate irony? I wouldn't have even considered importing Scrapped Princess if I hadn't seen a few eps fansubbed to start! And yet all the companies decry fansubbing and say it's evil and spoils their sales.

If it spoils their sales that much, maybe I should just go cancel the order on those 3 DVDs right now...

The trouble with fansubs is the cheapskates that are happy to keep their fansubbed stuff instead of then buying the real thing. Those of us who've seen fansubs and now actually pay for the real thing (if only to find out what is really being said) are a lesser evil.

On a side note I'd dearly love to know how you fund your manga/anime habit. You led me to believe your job wasn't all that well paid O.o

Eeeeh... well, my job is relatively well-paid, especially with the distinct lack of work I do... £6.50/h - although most other people who do secretarial / receptionist, even without the IT stuff, are more commonly paid £7-7.50/h.

And I will admit to having some fansubs that I still watch and haven't bought the legal anime of, but then, that's because I do tend to draw the line at £20 a disc. I mean, I used to pay £12-15 for a VHS with two eps on, and that was horrendous. But... there really is less to packaging and producing a DVD than there is a VHS, so even with the increase in eps on a disc, the price rise isn't particularly justified.

This is why the majority of my DVD collection is actually American. As illegal as that supposedly is to the big companies. ;) What with the exchange rate, it's better to buy from there. Those two Loveless discs... Both came to under £10!

But... they're still more expensive than manga, and I can't really go rushing off to buy anime based on the extremely shitty trailers the companies put out. I've done it before, and it's extremely hit and miss. You get some real gems like Rune Soldier Louie, which I own the complete set to... And then you get some total turkeys. Melty Lancer? Hah, that one was free, luckily. Weiss Kreuz is only good if you love laughing at extremely shitty dubs, both English AND Japanese (not to mention... assassins by night, flower-shop bishies by day? Bwah?). Admittedly, I found the sheer appallingness amazingly funny, so it wasn't a really bad buy, but it's not something to get if you're hoping for something well acted, written and animated...

And the anime companies are getting more and more miffed that people are saying the fansubs are done better. But sadly... they are! Makai Senki Disgaea, for example... has the translation at the bottom of the screen, and the kanji and romanisation at the top. I know it'd be difficult to do with the normal subtitling software for DVDs, but I doubt it's entirely impossible. ...Not to mention though, some of those fansubs are actually translated better...

Ultimately, and kinda randomly, what does the companies out of money the most is their shitty dubs. Saiyuki, for example... Never licensed here, so it's a little awkward to get... But good subs, nice animation, good plot... SHIT DUB! They localised it to hell and back and managed to make one character so far out of character it's unreal... I'll lend you the first manga and the first DVD if you want, then you can compare. :P

Uh... I'm ranting again, aren't I? ^^;;; Eheh...

Sa... that is, both Loveless discs were under £10 each. Meaning, me buying two discs, with P+P from the US, still came to less than one DVD here...

I'm used to your ranting now, I just let it wash over me :P

Besides, your points are all valid, anime is way overpriced, and nuts to the legality of importing from foreign countries.

I can't say that I've ever found a fansub that was better than the commercial version, but I've watched a lot less anime than you. Although saying that, the extra notes that some fansubbers put in helps with puns and such which are totally ignored by the legal dubs, i.e. how can you mistake a pot for a turtle, unless you know that the japanese words for both are similar? (At least I think that's what the two items were, been a while since I watched that one)

Yeah, I noticed that kinda thing when I was watching XXXHolic. The two little girls are called Maru and Moro, and Yuuko says to Watanuki that their full names are Marudashi and Morodashi. Which caused Watanuki to facefault.

What's the betting that isn't explained in the legal version?

Marudashi and Morodashi are both terms for flashing...
